Netherlands Working Conditions Survey

The NWCS (Netherlands Working Conditions Survey; NEA in Dutch) is one of the largest periodical surveys on the labor situation of Dutch employees. The NWCS questionnaire is a collaborative project of TNO, CBS and the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. The aim of the NWCS is to fill the need for information that the government, employers, unions and branch organizations express.

But the NWCS also:

provides information on the working conditions, employability, and health of a large and representative sample of employees in the Netherlands
supports the development of both scientific and political knowledge on the subject of labor
serves as official input for the Eurostat-statistics on work-related injury in the Netherlands

Data collection

The NWCS survey is held annually since 2003. The population consists of employees who live and work in the Netherlands and are within the age range of 15 and 75 (used to be between 15-65 in the period between 2003 and 2013). About 23.000 employees completed the survey in the period between 2003 and 2013. By 2014 the sample size was increased from 80.000 to 140.000. By now, the number of employees who complete the survey has grown to 58.000 in 2019 and 2020.

To make the sample as representative as possible, the collected data is weighted. This makes it possible to make valid conclusions on all employees in the Netherlands, based on the NWCS.

As of 2018, no paper versions of the questionnaire are used. An overview of the questions in the NWCS is available in the Dutch methodology report.
